MacBook Pro · A1990 · Ludhiana
Powerful, hot and hard on its own components — GPU faults, battery recalls and thermal throttling define this model.
15.4-inch body, four USB-C ports, Touch Bar, discrete Radeon graphics. The heaviest and hottest of the Touch Bar era.
Getting the A-number right matters — several MacBooks look identical externally but take completely different parts. Compare it against every model we repair if you are unsure.
These are the faults we see on this specific model at our Ghumar Mandi workshop — not a generic list. Recognising yours here usually means we already hold the parts and know the fix.
Discrete GPU faults and display artefacts
The Radeon Pro graphics run hot in a thin chassis. Symptoms are on-screen artefacts, garbled graphics, black screen with fans running, or failure to drive an external display. Proper repair means BGA rework — not a heat-gun reflow that lasts weeks.
Severe thermal throttling
The i9 configuration in particular throttles heavily once dust and dried paste accumulate. A clean and repaste recovers a substantial amount of sustained performance on this model.
Battery swelling — including recalled units
Apple ran a recall on certain 2019 15-inch batteries for overheating risk. Beyond that programme, ordinary age-related swelling is now widespread. A lifting trackpad or rocking chassis means stop using it.
Flexgate and backlight failure
Stage-light patches along the bottom edge progressing to full backlight loss. Verify with a torch before accepting any display quote — a dark-but-running screen is a board repair.
T2 no-power faults
Shares the A1989's T2 behaviour. Total silence on the power button is a board fault and repairable at chip level.
Soldered and T2-encrypted. Board repair is the only route to data on a dead machine.
Same membrane butterfly as the A1989 with the same failure modes; the larger topcase costs more to replace.
These are the ranges we actually quote for the A1990 after a free diagnosis. The written estimate you approve is the price you pay.
| Repair | Typical range | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Deep clean + thermal repaste | ₹3,500 – ₹6,500 | 24 hrs |
| Battery / topcase assembly | ₹15,000 – ₹24,000 | 2 – 5 days |
| GPU BGA rework | ₹12,000 – ₹20,000 | 3 – 6 days |
| T2 / no-power board repair | ₹8,000 – ₹19,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Flexgate cable repair (early) | ₹5,500 – ₹11,000 | 1 – 3 days |
| Display assembly | ₹26,000 – ₹38,000 | 3 – 5 days |
| Liquid damage board repair | ₹8,000 – ₹19,000 | 3 – 5 days |
15-inch topcases and displays are among the more expensive Intel-era parts. GPU rework requires proper BGA equipment, which we have in-house.
Worth repairing for board, GPU, cooling and battery faults — this is still a capable machine for heavy work and the repairs cost far less than an equivalent replacement. Be cautious when a display failure coincides with a GPU fault; at that point the combined cost needs a frank conversation, and we will have it with you before you commit.
Turnaround for this model is shown against each repair in the table above; diagnosis itself is same-day. Before leaving your MacBook Pro anywhere, it is worth knowing which questions to ask a repair shop — the difference between component-level repair and board replacement is invisible from the outside and decides both your bill and whether your data survives.
