Water Damage MacBook Recovery: The First Hour Decides Everything
Liquid rarely kills a MacBook instantly. Electricity flowing through a wet board does. Here is exactly what to do — and what not to do — after a spill.
By Shiv SharmaLead Technician, Shiv i Care · 11+ years board-level Apple repairLiquid on a MacBook is the one fault where your actions in the first hour matter more than anything a technician does later. Liquid itself rarely kills a board outright. What kills it is electricity flowing through a wet board, and corrosion spreading over the following days.
What not to do
- Do not put it in rice. Rice absorbs some ambient moisture and does nothing at all about liquid already on the board or the corrosion that has started. It also leaves starch and dust inside the machine.
- Do not use a hairdryer. Heat drives moisture deeper into components and connectors and can warp plastics and adhesives.
- Do not charge it. Applying power to a wet board is precisely the thing that causes irreversible damage.
- Do not keep testing it. Every power-on attempt pushes current through paths liquid has created.
- Do not shake it. That spreads liquid into areas it had not reached.
- Do not wait to "see if it dries out". It may appear to work for days and then die as corrosion bridges a rail — by which point the repair is far more expensive.
Why sugary and salty liquids are worse
Plain water is the best case. Tea and coffee with sugar and milk leave residue that stays conductive and hygroscopic long after the liquid has dried. Cold drinks are worse still — high sugar content plus acidity. Salt water is the most aggressive of all. If your spill was anything other than plain water, treat the urgency as higher, not lower.
How professional liquid damage recovery works
- 1Full disassembly. The machine is stripped, the battery disconnected immediately, and every component inspected.
- 2Board removal and inspection. Under a stereo microscope we map exactly where the liquid travelled — the pattern tells us which rails are at risk.
- 3Ultrasonic cleaning. The board goes into a board-safe solution in an ultrasonic bath, which removes residue from under chips and connectors where no brush can reach.
- 4Corrosion removal. Remaining corrosion is removed mechanically under magnification, component by component.
- 5Component replacement. Parts that corroded through — commonly filters, capacitors and small ICs — are replaced with hot-air rework.
- 6Staged power testing. Power is applied gradually on a bench supply and each rail is verified in sequence, so a remaining short does not cause new damage.
- 7Extended burn-in. Liquid damage repairs get longer testing than any other job, because delayed failures are the real risk.
What it costs and how long it takes
Liquid damage restoration at our Ludhiana workshop typically runs ₹4,000 to ₹16,000 and takes 3 to 5 days. The spread is almost entirely about timing and liquid type: a plain-water spill brought in within hours and never powered on is usually at the low end. A sugary drink spilled three weeks ago on a machine that has been repeatedly switched on is at the high end — sometimes beyond economic repair.
What about the data?
On 2013–2017 MacBooks the SSD is removable, so your files can usually be recovered quickly regardless of what happens to the board. On T2 and Apple Silicon machines the storage is soldered and encrypted to the board, so recovery requires bringing that board back to a working state. Tell us at intake if data is your priority and we sequence the work to protect it — see data recovery.
Will insurance or AppleCare cover it?
Standard AppleCare does not cover liquid damage; AppleCare+ covers it as accidental damage with a service fee, but the outcome is usually a whole-unit replacement — which means your data goes with it. Some home or business insurance policies cover accidental liquid damage. If you plan to claim, photograph everything before any repair begins.
Preventing the next one
- Keep drinks on a different surface from the laptop — not just a different part of the same desk.
- Use a lidded cup or bottle if you work with a drink beside you.
- A silicone keyboard cover buys seconds during a spill, which is often enough.
- Back up automatically with Time Machine plus a cloud copy, so a spill costs you a repair rather than your work.
