Mac minis lead quiet lives — under desks, behind monitors, running as servers or as the family computer — until they stop turning on or run out of space. Because they carry no screen or battery, the fault list is short and most of it is fixable cheaply.
We service every Mac mini generation at our Ghumar Mandi workshop, plus Mac Studio, with the same board-level capability we apply to MacBooks.
No light, no fan, no chime. On Intel minis this frequently traces to the internal power supply — a separate, replaceable module rather than the logic board. Where the fault is on the board, we trace the power rails with a bench supply and thermal camera exactly as we do on a MacBook. Power surges through poor mains are a common cause across Punjab, and the input stage is usually what takes the hit.
This is the highest-value job on older minis. Models from 2010 to 2012 take standard 2.5" SATA drives and can even run two at once. The 2014 mini uses a proprietary PCIe blade that can be upgraded with an adapter. In every case we clone your existing installation so the machine comes back exactly as you left it, just faster and larger.
The 2010–2012 minis have a user-accessible RAM door and take up to 16GB. The 2018 Intel mini is the standout — its RAM is genuinely upgradeable to 64GB, and taking a base 8GB unit to 32GB or 64GB is the difference between a machine that struggles and one that flies. The 2014 mini has soldered RAM, and so does every Apple Silicon mini.
Minis are often tucked into cabinets or stacked under other equipment, where they slowly choke on dust. A machine that runs hot, throttles under load, or whose fan never stops usually needs a full strip-down, clean and fresh thermal paste. Give it clear air around the base and rear vent afterwards.
Thunderbolt or USB-C ports that stop working, HDMI output that has died, or Ethernet that no longer links. These are board-level repairs — individual ports and their controllers can be replaced without swapping the entire logic board, which is what an authorised channel would quote.
A mini that powers on but shows nothing is not necessarily faulty. We check the cable, adapter and monitor input first, since these account for a good share of "dead" minis. If the machine genuinely produces no output on any port, the fault is on the board and we diagnose it at component level.
On M1, M2 and M4 Mac mini and on Mac Studio, storage and memory are part of the SoC. Nothing is upgradeable, and — importantly — your data lives on the board. That makes chip-level repair the only route to recovering files from a dead unit, because replacing the board destroys access permanently. A 2012 or 2018 Mac mini with an SSD and maxed RAM remains a genuinely useful machine for browsing, documents, accounts, a shop till system or a media server. Because it has no screen or battery to age, the two components that normally end a computer's life simply are not there. That makes minis unusually worth upgrading rather than replacing — and it is why we recommend the upgrade over a new machine more often here than in any other category.
