Shiv i Care
Four USB-C ports (two each side), Touch Bar above the keyboard, Touch ID power button. The A1708 looks similar but has only two ports and function keys.
Getting the A-number right matters — several MacBooks look identical externally but take completely different parts. Compare it against every model we repair if you are unsure.
These are the faults we see on this specific model at our Ghumar Mandi workshop — not a generic list. Recognising yours here usually means we already hold the parts and know the fix.
Butterfly keyboard failure
Sticking, repeating or dead keys, often from a single crumb. Apple's service programme has expired for these units. The only durable fix is a topcase replacement, which includes a new battery.
Flexgate — stage light effect along the bottom
The display flex cable wears through from opening and closing the lid. It starts as uneven bright patches at the bottom edge, then progresses to complete backlight failure. Caught early, a cable-level repair is sometimes possible.
Touch Bar failure
Blank, frozen or partially unresponsive Touch Bar. Sometimes a connector or cable issue, sometimes the Touch Bar assembly itself. Diagnosed before quoting because the two differ greatly in cost.
USB-C port and charging faults
Four ports doing every job including power. Port wear and surge damage to the charging circuitry are frequent and repairable at board level.
Swollen battery
Now common at this age. Because the battery is bonded into the topcase, replacement is a bigger job than on the A1502 — and a lifting trackpad is the usual first sign.
Storage is soldered to the logic board. It cannot be upgraded, and recovering data from a dead A1706 requires repairing the original board.
The most failure-prone keyboard Apple shipped. Repair means a full topcase including battery — the single most expensive routine repair on this model.
These are the ranges we actually quote for the A1706 after a free diagnosis. The written estimate you approve is the price you pay.
| Repair | Typical range | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Battery / topcase assembly | ₹12,000 – ₹20,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Keyboard (topcase) replacement | ₹12,000 – ₹20,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Flexgate cable repair (early) | ₹5,000 – ₹10,000 | 1 – 3 days |
| Display assembly | ₹20,000 – ₹28,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Touch Bar repair / replacement | ₹6,000 – ₹16,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Charging circuit / USB-C port | ₹4,500 – ₹9,500 | 24 – 72 hrs |
| Liquid damage board repair | ₹6,500 – ₹16,000 | 3 – 5 days |
Topcase assemblies bundle keyboard, battery and trackpad, which is why keyboard repair costs jump sharply from the previous generation.
Board-level repairs, charging faults and early flexgate work are clearly worth doing. The harder call is a topcase replacement on a 2016–2017 machine — it is a real spend, though it delivers a new keyboard and battery together. If the machine is otherwise healthy and you like it, it usually still beats replacement; if the display has also failed, think carefully.
Turnaround for this model is shown against each repair in the table above; diagnosis itself is same-day. Before leaving your MacBook Pro anywhere, it is worth knowing which questions to ask a repair shop — the difference between component-level repair and board replacement is invisible from the outside and decides both your bill and whether your data survives.
