Shiv i Care
Two USB-C ports only (both on the left), physical function keys instead of a Touch Bar, no Touch ID. Often confused with the A1706 — count the ports.
Getting the A-number right matters — several MacBooks look identical externally but take completely different parts. Compare it against every model we repair if you are unsure.
These are the faults we see on this specific model at our Ghumar Mandi workshop — not a generic list. Recognising yours here usually means we already hold the parts and know the fix.
Butterfly keyboard failure
Same mechanism, same problem — dead, sticking and repeating keys. The A1708's topcase is less expensive than the A1706's because there is no Touch Bar assembly bundled in.
Liquid damage reaching the board
The most common serious fault we see on this model. Because the SSD is removable, your data can usually be recovered quickly even when the board needs extensive work — a genuine advantage over every other model of this era.
Charging IC and USB-C port failure
Only two ports, both on the left, handling charging and everything else. Surge damage through poor chargers commonly takes out the charging circuitry.
Backlight and flexgate symptoms
Stage-light patches at the bottom edge, or a dark screen that shows a faint image under a torch. The second is a board-level backlight repair costing far less than a display.
Swollen battery
Bonded into the topcase. A lifting trackpad or a chassis that rocks is the giveaway, and it should be dealt with promptly.
Unlike its Touch Bar sibling, the A1708 has a removable proprietary SSD. That makes both upgrades and data recovery dramatically simpler — an important advantage if the board ever fails.
Shares the failure-prone butterfly mechanism. Topcase replacement is the durable fix, though it is cheaper on this model than on the Touch Bar version.
These are the ranges we actually quote for the A1708 after a free diagnosis. The written estimate you approve is the price you pay.
| Repair | Typical range | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| SSD upgrade / replacement | ₹7,000 – ₹16,000 | Same day – 24 hrs |
| Data recovery (removable SSD) | ₹5,000 – ₹9,000 | 1 – 2 days |
| Battery / topcase assembly | ₹10,000 – ₹17,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Backlight circuit repair | ₹3,500 – ₹7,000 | 24 – 48 hrs |
| Charging circuit / USB-C port | ₹4,500 – ₹9,500 | 24 – 72 hrs |
| Display assembly | ₹19,000 – ₹27,000 | 2 – 4 days |
| Liquid damage board repair | ₹6,000 – ₹15,000 | 3 – 5 days |
Topcases are cheaper than the A1706 equivalent. The removable SSD is the model's standout practical advantage.
A better long-term repair prospect than the A1706 purely because of the removable SSD — your data is never trapped behind a board failure. Battery, keyboard, backlight and charging repairs are all worth doing on a machine you otherwise like.
Turnaround for this model is shown against each repair in the table above; diagnosis itself is same-day. Before leaving your MacBook Pro anywhere, it is worth knowing which questions to ask a repair shop — the difference between component-level repair and board replacement is invisible from the outside and decides both your bill and whether your data survives.
