Shiv i Care
Display
5.4" Super Retina XDR OLED
Years
2020 – 2021
Port
Lightning
Back glass
Laser separation
The smallest iPhone of its era at 5.4 inches — noticeably shorter than everything around it. Flat aluminium sides, two cameras set diagonally, glossy back.
Display
OLED, which was new for the non-Pro line in this generation — the iPhone 11 below it was LCD. Panels are small but not cheap, and the tight chassis leaves little tolerance for a poorly fitted assembly.
Back glass
From the 12 onward the rear glass is separated with a laser rather than brute heat, which is faster and safer for the internals — but it is still a bench job, not a swap.
Face ID
Dot projector paired to the logic board. Face ID cannot be restored by fitting a new module; it is board-level transfer work or nothing.
Charging
Lightning. In a body this small the port sits very close to the speaker and mic assembly, so port work needs care to avoid collateral damage.
Battery
The smallest battery Apple has shipped in a modern iPhone. Owners felt it when new, and after five years the degradation is severe — this is the defining repair for the model.
Battery life, the model's signature complaint
A small cell in a 5G phone. Sudden shutdowns and a phone that will not last a working day are the norm at this age, and a replacement makes a bigger difference here than on any other 12.
Screen assembly fit
The tight chassis is unforgiving of low-grade aftermarket panels — lifting edges and inconsistent touch response near the frame show up quickly.
MagSafe not holding after a back glass repair
The magnet array is under the rear glass and is sometimes left out by shops that do not refit it. The symptom is chargers sliding off.
Charging port wear
Loose fit or charging only at an angle after years of daily cable use.
Diagnosis is free and the price is confirmed in writing before any work starts — we quote the machine in front of us, not a description over the phone.
If you want a genuinely small phone, this is the one worth keeping alive — nothing has replaced it, and a battery restores most of the experience for very little. Where the maths turns is a broken screen plus a tired battery: on a 2020 handset that combination starts to compete with a newer used phone, and we will tell you when it does.
Face ID is not a parts swap
On every iPhone from the X onward, the Face ID components are paired to your logic board. Anyone offering to restore Face ID by fitting a new module is mistaken — it is board-level work transferring your original parts, or it does not work at all.
