Flat aluminium sides, 6.1-inch screen, two cameras set diagonally on a glossy back. The 12 Pro is the same size but has three cameras, a matte back and stainless steel sides.
Display
OLED across the whole 12 line, unlike the 11 where only the Pro models had it. That raised screen replacement cost against the outgoing model and is the main reason a 12 screen costs more than an 11 screen.
Back glass
Laser-separated rear glass. Cleaner and quicker than the bonded backs on the 11 generation, though still substantially more involved than the redesigned iPhone 14.
Face ID
Paired dot projector, board-level repair only. If Face ID died right after a screen replacement elsewhere, the flex was almost certainly damaged in that job.
Charging
Lightning. Check for compacted lint before assuming a fault — it is the single most common cause of 'not charging' on this model and costs nothing to clear.
Battery
5G plus a moderate cell means these age at a normal rate rather than a severe one. Most iPhone 12 units are now at or below the 80% mark where a replacement is worthwhile.
Cracked OLED after a flat-side drop
The squared edges introduced in this generation transmit more shock to the panel corner than the rounded 11 did. Corner-first drops crack screens that would have survived on the older shape.
Battery below 80%
The standard end-of-life pattern: shorter days, then throttling, then shutdowns under load or in cold weather.
Rear camera glass cracks
The camera bump takes the impact face-down. The module underneath is often fine and only the cover glass needs replacing.
No service or weak signal
5G-era antenna and baseband faults, sometimes after liquid exposure. Board-level diagnosis rather than a parts swap.
Diagnosis is free and the price is confirmed in writing before any work starts — we quote the machine in front of us, not a description over the phone.
Comfortably worth repairing. The iPhone 12 still runs current software well, and screen, battery and port repairs are all sensible against what the phone is worth. Liquid damage on top of a cracked screen is where we would ask you to pause and look at the total.
Face ID is not a parts swap
On every iPhone from the X onward, the Face ID components are paired to your logic board. Anyone offering to restore Face ID by fitting a new module is mistaken — it is board-level work transferring your original parts, or it does not work at all.
