Shiv i Care
Display
6.1" Super Retina XDR, ProMotion OLED 120Hz
Years
2021 – 2022
Port
Lightning
Back glass
Laser separation
Same 6.1-inch size as the standard 13, but with three cameras, LiDAR, a matte back and stainless steel sides. The screen is visibly smoother when scrolling — that is ProMotion.
Display
ProMotion 120Hz OLED — a different and more expensive assembly than the standard 13. Aftermarket 120Hz panels vary a lot in whether they actually sustain the refresh rate, which is worth asking about before agreeing a cheap quote.
Back glass
Matte laser-separated glass with the MagSafe array behind it. The frosted finish is the part aftermarket panels struggle to match.
Face ID
This is the generation where screen repair and Face ID became entangled. Apple relocated the Face ID components and paired them to the display, and for a time any third-party panel disabled Face ID completely. iOS 15.2 removed that hard block, but an aftermarket screen still needs the pairing chip transferred by microsoldering to behave normally. If your Face ID died after a screen replacement elsewhere, this is why — and it is recoverable.
Charging
Lightning, with the usual lint-first diagnosis.
Battery
Larger than the 12 Pro despite the same body size, and ProMotion is adaptive rather than always-on, so these hold up well. Most are due a first replacement now.
Face ID lost after a screen repair elsewhere
As across the 13 line, and just as recoverable at board level.
Macro or telephoto camera failure
Macro mode not engaging at close range, or the 3x lens producing black frames. Pro-only faults the standard 13 cannot have.
Cracked ProMotion panel
The most expensive screen in the 6.1-inch class that year, and the place where panel quality matters most.
Diagnosis is free and the price is confirmed in writing before any work starts — we quote the machine in front of us, not a description over the phone.
Worth repairing across the board. The camera system and 120Hz screen are the reasons to own this rather than a standard 13, so keeping both working is usually the right call. Ask specifically whether a quoted screen is a true ProMotion panel — that is where cheap quotes come from.
Face ID is not a parts swap
On every iPhone from the X onward, the Face ID components are paired to your logic board. Anyone offering to restore Face ID by fitting a new module is mistaken — it is board-level work transferring your original parts, or it does not work at all.
