Display
5.4" Super Retina XDR OLED
Years
2021 – 2022
Port
Lightning
Back glass
Laser separation
The last small iPhone Apple made: 5.4 inches, flat sides, two cameras set diagonally. Against a 12 mini, the notch is visibly narrower.
Display
OLED with the narrower notch introduced this generation. Not interchangeable with the 12 mini panel despite the near-identical body size.
Back glass
Laser-separated glass with the MagSafe array behind it, refitted as part of the job.
Face ID
This is the generation where screen repair and Face ID became entangled. Apple relocated the Face ID components and paired them to the display, and for a time any third-party panel disabled Face ID completely. iOS 15.2 removed that hard block, but an aftermarket screen still needs the pairing chip transferred by microsoldering to behave normally. If your Face ID died after a screen replacement elsewhere, this is why — and it is recoverable.
Charging
Lightning, in a very tight chassis. Port work sits close to the speaker assembly and needs a careful hand.
Battery
A genuinely better cell than the 12 mini in the same footprint, which is why the 13 mini is the compact iPhone worth keeping. Still small in absolute terms, so degradation is felt.
Face ID lost after a screen repair elsewhere
The defining fault of this generation. Recoverable by transferring the pairing chip at board level, which most shops cannot do.
Battery below 80%
Better than the 12 mini but still a small cell. A replacement restores a full day for most users.
Cracked OLED
The compact chassis is unforgiving of low-grade panels — edge lift and poor touch response near the frame appear within months.
Diagnosis is free and the price is confirmed in writing before any work starts — we quote the machine in front of us, not a description over the phone.
Worth keeping alive if you want a small phone — nothing has replaced it, and battery and screen work are both sensible. The one thing to insist on is that whoever does your screen can transfer the Face ID pairing; a cheap repair that kills Face ID costs more to undo than doing it properly first time.
Face ID is not a parts swap
On every iPhone from the X onward, the Face ID components are paired to your logic board. Anyone offering to restore Face ID by fitting a new module is mistaken — it is board-level work transferring your original parts, or it does not work at all.
