Why MacBooks Stop Charging: 7 Causes, Cheapest First
"Not charging" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. These are the seven causes we see, ordered from the free fix to the board repair.
By Shiv SharmaLead Technician, Shiv i Care · 11+ years board-level Apple repairA MacBook that will not charge sends most people straight to searching for a new battery. Often that is the wrong part. "Not charging" is a symptom with at least seven distinct causes, and they range from a free five-minute fix to a board-level repair. Work through them in this order.
1. Debris in the charging port (free)
The most common cause, and the one nobody suspects. Pocket lint compacts into USB-C ports until the connector cannot seat fully. Look in with a torch — grey felt means lint. Power the machine off and remove it carefully with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use anything metal.
2. A failed cable or charger (₹2,000 – ₹6,000)
Cables fail far more often than bricks, usually at the strain point where they leave the connector. Test with a known-good charger before assuming anything about the machine. Poor-quality third-party chargers are also a leading cause of the board damage further down this list — they are not a saving.
3. A worn-out battery (₹4,500 – ₹16,000)
Hold Option, click the Apple menu, open System Information and select Power. If Condition says Service Recommended, or Full Charge Capacity has dropped well below Design Capacity, or cycle count is past 1,000, the cell is worn. Replacement is usually same-day — see battery replacement.
4. Thermal protection (free)
macOS deliberately pauses charging when the battery is too hot — after heavy work in a Ludhiana summer, or when the machine has been used on a bed with blocked vents. Let it cool for half an hour and try again. If it charges normally when cool, this was your answer.
5. Optimised Battery Charging (free)
If the machine sits at 80% and refuses to go higher, that is a feature, not a fault. macOS holds the charge at 80% to reduce battery ageing and completes the charge when it predicts you will need it. Leave it enabled — it genuinely extends battery life.
6. A damaged charging port (₹4,000 – ₹8,500)
If the machine charges only at a specific cable angle, or one port works while another does not, the port itself is likely damaged — worn pins, a bent shell or a cracked solder joint from sideways force on the plugged-in cable. Ports are replaceable individually; the machine does not need a new board.
7. Charging circuit failure on the board (₹4,500 – ₹12,000)
If macOS reports Not Charging with a healthy battery and a known-good charger, or the machine runs only on mains and ignores the battery entirely, the fault is in the charging IC or the sense circuitry on the board. Power surges are the usual cause, which is why this is common in Punjab. It is a chip-level repair — see logic board repair.
The quick diagnostic sequence
- 1Look inside the port with a torch. Clear any lint with a wooden toothpick, machine powered off.
- 2Try a different charger and cable, and a different wall socket.
- 3Check Condition, cycle count and Full Charge Capacity in System Information → Power.
- 4Let the machine cool for 30 minutes if it has been working hard.
- 5Check whether Optimised Battery Charging is holding it at 80%.
- 6Try both sides of the machine if it has multiple USB-C ports.
- 7If none of that changes anything, the fault is on the board — get a free diagnosis.
We test the charger, the port, the battery and the board separately at our Ghumar Mandi workshop precisely so nobody is sold a battery when the real fault is a ₹1,500 port clean or a board repair. Diagnosis is free — call +91 75080 10067.
