M1 MacBook Not Turning On? Work Through These Steps First
Apple Silicon MacBooks have no SMC to reset, so the old advice does not apply. Here is what actually works — and the point at which you should stop trying.

Apple Silicon machines have no SMC to reset and no NVRAM reset worth doing — so half the usual instructions simply do not apply.
Here is what genuinely helps, in the order worth trying.
Step 1 — Rule out the charger, not the Mac
Chargers fail far more often than MacBooks do, and cables fail more often than bricks. Try a different known-good charger and cable, and a different wall socket. If you have another USB-C charger of 30W or more, try that. A large share of "dead MacBook" cases in our Ludhiana workshop are dead chargers.
Step 2 — Check the port for debris
Pocket lint compacts into USB-C ports over months until the connector no longer seats fully. Look into the port with a torch. If you see grey felt, that is compacted lint. It can be removed carefully with a wooden or plastic toothpick with the machine powered off — never anything metal.
Step 3 — Charge for a full hour before judging
A deeply discharged battery can take 30 to 60 minutes on the charger before the machine will respond to the power button at all. Plug it in, leave it alone, and come back later. Do not keep pressing the power button in the meantime.
Step 4 — Force restart properly
- 1Hold the power button down for a full 10 seconds — longer than feels natural.
- 2Release, wait 10 seconds.
- 3Press the power button once, normally.
This clears a stuck power state, which is a genuine and reasonably common condition on Apple Silicon machines.
Step 5 — Look for subtle signs of life
In a dark, quiet room, check for: a faint fan sound, warmth near the hinge, the keyboard backlight flickering briefly, the startup chime, or a very dim image if you shine a torch at the screen at an angle.
Step 6 — Try an external display
Connect the MacBook to a monitor or TV. If an image appears there, the machine is booting normally and the fault is in the display path — panel, cable or backlight. That is a completely different and usually cheaper repair.
Step 7 — DFU restore (needs a second Mac)
If the machine shows power but will not boot, the firmware may be corrupt — after a failed macOS update, for example. A DFU restore using a second Mac and Apple Configurator can revive it. It is fiddly, model-specific and it can erase your data if you choose Restore rather than Revive. If your files are not backed up, bring it to us instead; we run DFU restores in-house and will attempt the non-destructive path first.
When to stop and bring it in
- Liquid was involved. Stop now. Do not plug it in, do not power it on, do not use rice. Every attempt spreads corrosion under power.
- It died right after a power fluctuation or with a third-party charger. That is surge damage to the input stage — a board repair.
- It gets warm but never displays anything. The board is partly alive; the power sequence is failing partway.
- Nothing at all after a full hour on a known-good charger. Further button-pressing achieves nothing and can worsen a short.
What is usually wrong at that point
In our experience with Apple Silicon no-power cases in Ludhiana, the ranking is: liquid damage first, then USB-C port or charging IC failure after a surge, then power delivery components on the board, then battery failure preventing power-on, and occasionally firmware corruption that a DFU revive fixes.
All of these are repairable at component level. And critically on Apple Silicon, your data lives on the board — the storage is soldered and encrypted to the SoC, so replacing the board destroys your files permanently.
