iPhone Water Damage: What To Do In The First 24 Hours
Your iPhone is water resistant, not waterproof — and that rating expires with age. What you do in the first day decides whether this is a clean or a chapter.
By Shiv SharmaLead Technician, Shiv i Care · 11+ years board-level Apple repairEvery iPhone from the 7 onwards carries an IP rating, and almost everybody reads that as waterproof. It is not. It is a laboratory rating, measured on a brand-new device, in still fresh water, at a fixed depth and time. Your phone is two years old, has been dropped, has had a screen off, and went into a swimming pool. None of the test conditions apply.
So the phone may survive, or it may not — and what you do in the next day changes those odds far more than anything else.
Why powering it on is the actual danger
Water alone is a poor conductor. Water carrying minerals, chlorine, salt or sugar is a good one, and it bridges circuits that were never meant to touch. With the phone off, a bridge does nothing. With power flowing, that bridge becomes a short — and shorts destroy components in milliseconds while corrosion is still only getting started.
This is why the most damaged phones we see are almost never the ones that fell in water. They are the ones that fell in water and were then switched on four times to check.
The rice myth, properly buried
- Rice absorbs a little ambient humidity from the air around the phone. It does nothing whatsoever about liquid already sitting on the logic board.
- Corrosion begins within minutes of the water arriving. Twenty-four hours in a bag of rice is twenty-four hours of corrosion spreading, unopposed.
- Rice dust and starch get into the charging port and speaker mesh, where they hold moisture rather than removing it.
- The phone that "came back fine after rice" was a phone that would have come back fine anyway.
Not all liquid is equal
| Liquid | Risk level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clean fresh water | Lower | Least conductive, least residue |
| Rain / puddle water | Moderate | Dissolved minerals stay conductive after drying |
| Chlorinated pool water | High | Chlorine attacks solder joints and shielding |
| Sea water | Very high | Salt is aggressively corrosive and stays active for months |
| Tea, coffee, soft drinks | Very high | Sugar residue is conductive and hygroscopic |
| Toilet / drain water | High | Contaminants plus bacteria, needs full ultrasonic cleaning |
If your phone met anything other than clean fresh water, treat the timeline as hours rather than days. Salt water in particular keeps corroding long after the phone looks and feels completely dry.
The delayed failure nobody warns you about
The most frustrating case in this trade is the phone that works perfectly for three weeks after a spill and then dies. Corrosion is a slow chemical process. It creeps along a rail, thins a trace, bridges two pads — and then one morning the phone will not turn on, and the repair is now three times what a preventive clean would have cost.
If your iPhone got wet and currently works, that is the best possible moment to have it opened and cleaned. It is the cheapest this repair will ever be.
What professional liquid damage repair involves
- 1Immediate battery disconnect. Before anything else, so no current can flow anywhere on the board.
- 2Full teardown and inspection. Every module out, every connector examined under magnification. The pattern of residue tells us where the water travelled and which rails are at risk.
- 3Ultrasonic cleaning. The board goes into a board-safe solution in an ultrasonic bath, which lifts residue from underneath shields and chips where nothing else reaches.
- 4Corrosion removal under a microscope. Whatever survives the bath is removed mechanically, joint by joint.
- 5Component-level replacement. Corroded filters, capacitors and ICs are replaced with hot-air rework rather than the whole board being swapped.
- 6Staged bench power-up. Current draw is watched on a bench supply as power comes up in stages, so any remaining short is caught before it causes new damage.
- 7Extended burn-in. Liquid jobs get longer testing than any other repair we do, precisely because delayed failure is the real enemy.
Data first, phone second
If the photos matter more than the phone, say so at intake. It changes the order we work in: we prioritise getting the device stable enough to boot once and complete a backup, before doing anything that risks the storage. On modern iPhones the NAND is paired to the logic board and encrypted, so data recovery means bringing that specific board back to life — there is no simply reading the chip elsewhere. Read more about data recovery.
What it costs and how long it takes
Liquid damage is the one repair nobody can price over the phone honestly, because the cost is set by what the water reached. A phone brought in the same day, never powered on, needing a clean and one filter replaced is a modest job. The same phone brought in three weeks later, after repeated charging attempts, may need power-section rebuilding. Both start with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work begins — and if it is beyond economic repair, we tell you that instead of billing you to find out.
