8 Signs Your MacBook Logic Board Is Failing
Logic boards rarely fail without warning. These eight symptoms are the ones worth acting on before the machine stops turning on entirely.

They usually give weeks or months of warning first — and those warnings get dismissed as "macOS being weird" until the machine stops turning on entirely. Recognising them early often means a cheaper repair and a much better chance of protecting your data.
1. Random shutdowns under load
The machine is fine while you browse, then dies the moment you export video, compile code or join a video call. That pattern points to power delivery components failing when current demand rises. It is not a software problem, and it will get worse.
2. Fans at full speed from a cold boot
If the fans roar the instant you power on — before macOS has even loaded — the board is not receiving valid temperature data. A failed thermal sensor or an SMC-side fault makes the system assume the worst and run fans at maximum as a safety default.
3. Ports stop working one by one
One USB-C port stops charging. A month later it stops carrying data. Then the port on the other side starts behaving oddly. This progressive pattern usually means retimer or I/O-section components are degrading — often from an earlier liquid ingress you may not even remember.
4. Boot loops that survive a clean install
If you have erased the drive and reinstalled macOS and the machine still panics or loops, the problem is not software. Persistent kernel panics after a clean install are one of the clearest indicators of a hardware-level fault.
5. Battery that will not charge past a certain point
A battery stuck at 1%, or one that charges to 60% and stops, is often a charging-circuit fault rather than a worn cell. Check the cycle count first — if it is low and health is good, the fault is on the board. See battery replacement.
6. Screen dark but the machine is clearly running
Shine a torch at the screen. If you can faintly see the desktop, the LCD is fine and the backlight circuit on the board has failed — typically a blown backlight fuse and a damaged filter. Inexpensive to repair, frequently mis-sold as a display replacement.
7. Graphics artefacts, especially on 15-inch Intel Pros
Coloured lines, checkerboard patterns, garbled text or graphics that break under load on discrete-GPU MacBook Pros indicate solder-joint fatigue under the GPU. Proper repair means BGA rework, not a heat-gun reflow that buys two weeks.
8. It only works in one position
A machine that runs on a hard desk but dies on your lap, or works only when the lid is at a particular angle, has a physical fault — a cracked solder joint or a damaged flex cable that opens and closes as the chassis flexes. Physical faults get worse with use, so this one is worth acting on quickly.
What to do next
- 1Back up immediately — Time Machine to an external drive, plus a cloud copy of anything irreplaceable.
- 2Note the pattern. When does it happen? Under load, when charging, at a particular lid angle? That detail speeds up diagnosis enormously.
- 3Stop using it for critical work if shutdowns are frequent.
