iPhone Showing No Service: Network, Antenna or Baseband?
"No Service" has three completely different causes with three completely different price tags. Ruling out the free one takes five minutes.

It is also one of the faults where people most often pay for the wrong repair, because three very different problems produce identical words on screen: No Service, or Searching that never resolves.
Step one: prove it is the phone
- 1Toggle Airplane Mode on for ten seconds and off again. This forces a fresh network registration and clears a surprising number of cases.
- 2Restart the phone. Same reasoning, more thorough.
- 3Try the SIM in another phone. If it also fails there, the SIM or the account is the problem and no repair is needed.
- 4Try a different working SIM in your phone. If that one works, your original SIM has failed — they do age, especially older physical SIMs.
- 5Check for a carrier settings update in Settings › General › About. If one is pending it will prompt within a few seconds of opening that screen.
- 6Reset Network Settings in Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone. You will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterwards.
If a known-good SIM in your phone still shows No Service after all six, it is hardware, and it is worth knowing which kind before you spend anything.
The three hardware causes
1. SIM reader or tray
The cheapest and most common. The SIM reader contacts wear, bend or corrode — often after repeated tray swaps, or after the phone got damp. The signature symptom is intermittency: signal that returns if you press the tray, or works until the phone is put in a pocket. Replacing the reader is a modest board-level job.
2. Antenna and antenna flex
iPhones use the metal frame as part of the antenna system, with flex cables connecting it to the board. A drop that bends the frame, or a previous repair that left an antenna flex unseated or torn, produces weak signal, dropped calls, or No Service that changes when you hold the phone differently. Usually repairable, and usually not expensive.
3. Baseband — the chip-level fault
The baseband processor and its power management IC handle all cellular communication. When these fail — from a drop, from liquid, or from a bad board-flex event — you get permanent No Service, and on some models the IMEI reads as unavailable or all zeros in Settings › General › About.
Baseband work is genuine microsoldering — reballing or replacing an IC under a microscope with hot-air rework, on a board where neighbouring components are millimetres away. Most shops decline it and quote a whole board or a new phone instead. It is repairable, and it is exactly the kind of work our chip-level logic board service exists for.
Two special cases worth knowing
- No Service on 4G but fine on Wi-Fi calling. That is still a cellular hardware fault — Wi-Fi calling bypasses the baseband's radio path entirely, so it proves nothing about the radio.
- Signal that dies only when the phone gets warm. Almost always a marginal solder joint that opens as the board expands. Intermittent-with-heat is a strong board-level signature.
What it costs to find out
Nothing. We check the SIM reader, the antenna path and the baseband before quoting, because the price difference between those three is large and guessing helps nobody. You get a written quote for the actual fault, and if it turns out to be a failed SIM you walk out having spent nothing.
