A researcher's MacBook holds field data, analysis and a dissertation that may exist nowhere else. We have recovered exactly that kind of work from boards that would not power on. Two things follow. First: on any Apple Silicon or T2 machine the storage is soldered to the logic board, so replacing the board destroys the data permanently — a shop that offers a board swap is offering to delete your thesis. Second: stop using the machine the moment it misbehaves, and bring it in before submission week rather than during it.
