SSD Upgrade for MacBook: Which Models Can, and What To Do If Yours Cannot
2013–2017 MacBooks take NVMe upgrades with an adapter. T2 and Apple Silicon machines do not — but there is a good alternative.
By Shiv SharmaLead Technician, Shiv i Care · 11+ years board-level Apple repairRunning out of storage is the most common reason people replace a MacBook that is otherwise perfectly good. On many models that is an expensive mistake — an SSD upgrade costs a fraction of a new machine and can make an older MacBook feel genuinely quick again.
Can your MacBook be upgraded?
| Model range | Upgradable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air / Pro 2010–2012 | Yes | Proprietary Apple SSD, adapters available |
| MacBook Air / Pro 2013–2017 | Yes | NVMe drive plus adapter — the sweet spot |
| MacBook Pro 2016–2017 (Touch Bar) | No | Storage soldered to the board |
| MacBook 2018+ with T2 chip | No | Soldered and encrypted to the T2 |
| MacBook Air / Pro M1, M2, M3 | No | Storage integrated with the SoC |
| MacBook Pro pre-2012 (HDD) | Yes | Standard 2.5" SATA — biggest speed gain of all |
The 2013–2017 sweet spot
These models use a proprietary Apple SSD connector, but a small adapter lets you fit a standard NVMe drive. A 2015 MacBook Pro with a 128GB drive can become a 1TB machine for a fraction of a replacement, and a modern NVMe drive is typically faster than the original Apple part as well.
We clone the existing installation before swapping, so you get back the same desktop, apps, settings and files — just with far more room. Same-day service in most cases.
If your storage is soldered
T2 Intel machines and all Apple Silicon MacBooks have storage soldered to the board and encrypted to the Secure Enclave. Internal upgrades are not possible. The practical alternative is fast external storage:
- Thunderbolt 3/4 NVMe enclosure — up to around 2,800 MB/s, close enough to internal for video editing and large photo libraries.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosure — around 1,000 MB/s, much cheaper and fine for archives, libraries and Time Machine.
- Move your libraries, not your system. Photos, Music and iMovie libraries and Final Cut events can all live on external storage while macOS stays internal.
- Offload with iCloud Drive — Optimise Mac Storage keeps recent files local and older ones in the cloud.

| 512GB NVMe + adapter | ₹8,500 – ₹12,000 | Same day |
| 1TB NVMe + adapter | ₹12,000 – ₹18,000 | Same day |

Is it worth it on an older machine?
Usually yes, if the machine still does what you need. A 2015 MacBook Pro with a new SSD and a fresh battery is a perfectly capable machine for documents, browsing, email and light editing — and the combined cost is a fraction of a new laptop. Where it stops making sense is when you need current macOS features that the machine no longer supports, or when the CPU genuinely limits your work.
Bring your MacBook to our Ghumar Mandi workshop and we will check the model, the current drive health and whether an upgrade is worthwhile for what you actually do with it. See also MacBook repair in Ludhiana and data recovery.
